Many Jews settled in Satu Mare. The community grew rapidly and had a strong influence on the whole of the country. In the early 20th century, Satu Mare already had three synagogues and 25 Jewish prayer houses. Today, only the great synagogue remains: it is built on the spot where Satu Mare’s first synagogue once stood, on today’s Decebal Street, close to the city park. The modern synagogue in neo-roman style was built between 1889 and 1892 and designed by architect Nándor Bach from Oradea.
